02/03/07 - Scenic Road Litter Clean-Up

The day was cold and windy, and the ice was thick enough to walk on but that did not deter over two dozen hearty souls from the planned litter clean-up at Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge on a 2.5-mile long stretch of Bryant’s Ford Road and Bypass Road in Marshall County and McCracken County.  This stretch of country road is considered one of the more scenic on the refuge but it is well traveled and heavily abused.

By day’s end refuge staff had hauled off four heaping trailer loads and six pick-up loads of trash including about 60-70 tires.  Despite the cold weather everyone seemed to enjoy the task and the participants learned a little about the history and management of the refuge.  At the end of the day everyone gathered at the warm refuge office to enjoy cheeseburgers and fries purchased from the Calvert City Drive-In with a donation by Parkway Chrysler.  The food purchase also helped raise funds for the Marshall County High School Band.

This “Kentucky Beautiful!” project was made possible by the Friends of Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge, members of the Murray State University Chapter of The Wildlife Society, the Kentucky Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, local high school students, Parkway Chrysler and the Calvert City Drive-In.
